New Delhi, April 9 -- India overtook Germany to become the world's third largest generator of electricity from wind and solar in 2024, Ember, a global energy think tank said on Tuesday. The largest generators are China and the US.
India's wind and solar generation doubled in the five years leading to 2024 and the country recorded the fourth-largest increase in solar generation of any country in 2024, more than the total solar generation of the UK. This was driven by record capacity additions in 2024, more than double the additions in 2023. However, lower solar radiation meant that the generation increase seen in 2024 did not fully reflect the impact of this capacity boom, Ember said in its report titled Global Electricity Review 2025.
