India 'geared down' Russian oil purchases after tariff imposed: US
New Delhi, Jan. 21 -- US treasury secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday acknowledged that India has "geared down" its purchases of Russian oil in response to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, even as he said Europe and China continue to finance Russia's war in Ukraine through oil purchases.
"India started [after the war in Ukraine] buying Russian oil again, but President Trump put a 25% tariff on them and India has geared down," Bessent said during a discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
In contrast, he said, Europe has been "buying Russian oil, still four years later, they're financing the war against themselves", while "China is a very large buyer of Russian oil, as they are of Iranian oil".
