Immigration order to spur politics ahead of state polls
New Delhi, Sept. 4 -- The roll-out of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, is set to trigger a political battle between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition ahead of assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal, with the BJP claiming to save persecuted minorities and the Opposition accusing the ruling dispensation of engaging in polarisation.
The Union home ministry said in an order on Tuesday that members of minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan - Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians - who came to India till December 31, 2024 to escape religious persecution will be allowed to stay in the country without a passport or other travel documents.
