Shimla, Jan. 10 -- The Himachal Pradesh high court on Friday directed the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government to conduct the Panchayati Raj polls in the state before April 30, while rejecting the government's plea seeking to defer the elections by six months.
The government had also pleaded the state election commission for an extension, citing that the state has suffered severe damage to public and private properties and roads due to the recent disaster and logistical challenges.
The government said at least six months were needed to hold the elections, but the court did not accept the argument.
The five-year term of panchayati raj institutions will end on January 31, while the tenure of 50 urban local bodies will end on January 18.
