High-value crops, AI in focus in agri budget
New Delhi, Feb. 2 -- The government will strengthen high-value crop ecosystems, focusing on produce such as coconut, cashew and sandalwood, along with a new multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) tool, to raise farm productivity and incomes, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Sunday.
The Union Budget allocated Rs.1,40,248.78 crore for the agriculture ministry, up by 5% from the final allocation (or revised estimates) of Rs.1,33,370.13 crore during 2025-26 and a budget estimate of Rs.1,37,756.55 crore.
The budget for the farm research department, which funds public investments in better seeds and technologies, continues to be relatively smaller, at Rs.9,967 crore or 7% of the overall farm outlay.
