New Delhi, June 8 -- Delhi and parts of northwest India are in for a hot week ahead even as monsoon rains are expected to remain stalled over central and east India until June 12, minimising hopes for any relief from intense spells of heat, according to predictions by the India Meteorological Department. The heat began to settle in on Saturday in the Capital with the mercury inching closer to the 40degC threshold. Delhi's base weather station, Safdarjung, recorded a maximum of 39.8degC, around normal for this time of the season. It is likely to touch 42degC on Sunday and possibly go up to 44degC by Tuesday.
