New Delhi, April 26 -- The Delhi high court in a recent order refused to grant anticipatory bail to a man accused of cheating a woman of over Rs.5 crore using his connections with a religious preacher who was known to the victim.

"One cannot ignore the harsh reality of our society where gullible individuals facing the rough weathers in life, fall prey to such inducements in the name of religious preachers," a bench of justice Girish Kathpalia said in the April 22 order.

The case began when the woman complained that the man approached her and convinced her to invest in a scheme in the preacher's name.

In his petition before the high court, the man asserted that he had already paid back Rs.96 lakh.
