New Delhi, March 22 -- The central sanctioning and monitoring committee approved the first set of houses, totalling 3,52,915 in 10 states, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 on Thursday.

The Union cabinet had approved the scheme to construct 10 million houses for the urban poor and middle-class families in August 2024.

A government release said that an overwhelming number of women (2,67,000 or 76%), including widows, and 90 transgender people were among the beneficiaries. The release added that Thursday's sanctions also promote inclusiveness and equality among different underprivileged groups, with 80,850 (23%) being scheduled caste beneficiaries, 15,928 (5%) scheduled tribes, and 2,12,603 (60%) from the other backwar...
