ex-cji condemns short-seller Viceroy's report on vedanta
New Delhi, July 19 -- Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, in a legal opinion issued to Vedanta Ltd, has strongly condemned a report published by US-based short-seller Viceroy Research Group, terming it "defamatory," "lacking credibility," and an instance of market manipulation designed to unlawfully profit from a fall in share prices.
In his 20-page legal opinion, delivered on a query from Vedanta Ltd following the publication of the Viceroy's controversial July 9 report, the former CJI held that the elements required to establish both civil and criminal defamation were "clearly satisfied." He advised that Vedanta would be "well placed" to seek remedies before Indian courts against Viceroy and its associates.
