India, Sept. 13 -- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit near the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka region on Saturday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.

The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), GFZ added.

The fresh tremors come over a month after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula, a region with a long history of seismic activity.

Back then, the quake triggered tsunami warnings, not just in Russia, but also parts of the US, Japan, Hawaii, Chile, Costa Rica and others.
