Delhi sets a precedent for public participation
New Delhi, Aug. 4 -- The Delhi government wanted to set up 150 air purifiers at the popular Nehru Park in South Delhi's Chankyapuri, and sought public responses over the project. I don't know about the government, but I was surprised by the public response.
The survey revealed that around 38% of voters only wanted trees in the park and 13% of them gave a firm no. Hence, 51% rejected the plan. The Delhi government then dropped the project as it wanted at least 80% in favour to go ahead with it.
This is a big step by the Delhi government. It is known that, in many cases, public participation is part of the solution. It is also important for a neglected city like Delhi to mobilise public opinion to find solutions that people can enable.
