India, Feb. 8 -- As the intense race for the national capital concludes, the Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the heavyweight, winning 40 out of 70 assembly seats, according to data released by the Election Commission of India as of 4:40 pm. The saffron party has secured a two-thirds majority and is set to return to power in Delhi after 27 years.

While the Aam Admi Party faltered, Chief Minister Atishi managed to hold onto the Kalkaji assembly constituency, defeating BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress' Alka Lamba.

The Congress failed to make its mark, with most exit poll predictions correctly forecasting the BJP's sweep and the grand old party's lacklustre performance.
