Barmer, Jan. 12 -- A 25-year-old Dalit man was hung upside down from a tree and brutally beaten on suspicion of theft in Barmer district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in Gudamalani area of the district on Friday, police said. The incident came to light after a purported video of the incident was shared on social media.

"After the video came to light, we immediately contacted the victim and initiated probe in the matter," deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sukhram Bishnoi said. "The individuals involved in the attack are being identified, and strict legal action will be taken against them. A detailed probe is currently underway."
