CM: Christian sub-castes option removed from list
Bengaluru, Sept. 21 -- Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced that the controversial "Christian" nomenclature in the state's caste survey has been removed.
"It (reference to Christians) has been removed now. It is not me who has removed it," Siddaramiah told reporters in Gadag district of Karnataka. "The Backward Class Commission is a statutory body. We cannot interfere in it. We have given guidelines, and they are following it."
The development comes in the wake of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot writing to Siddarmaiah on September 16, cautioning him that identifying Christian with caste names such as 'Kumbara Christian', 'Kuruba Christian' in the caste survey could cause "social disturbance, long term complications and i...
