India, Feb. 9 -- Two security personnel and 31 Maoists were killed in an encounter in forests under the National Park area of Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Sunday.

While the toll of Maoists was initially 12, IG Bastar, P Sundarraj, later confirmed that the toll has gone up to 31. The operation was underway at noon on Sunday.

The encounter comes a week after eight Maoists were killed in another operation security forces launched in Bijapur district.

Two security personnel was also injured in the gunfight.

The gunfight in which eight Maoists were killed broke out on January 31 when a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Maoist operation, news agency PTI quoted a senior police official as saying.
