New Delhi, July 3 -- Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday met 16th finance commission chairman Arvind Panagariya and sought an increase in the state's share in the devolution of federal taxes, citing development needs. The chief minister's meeting follows a visit by members of the finance commission led by Panagariya to the state last year, when he proposed that the eight northeastern states should be treated as a "collective block" and be given at least 10% of central tax revenues, the first time such a proposal has been mooted for the region.
