apex court seeks govt, asi reply on plea over madurai temple
New Delhi, Jan. 24 -- The Supreme Court on Friday sought responses from the Centre and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on a petition seeking that the agency take over a temple in Madurai and ensure that the lamp atop Thiruparankundram hill remains lit year-round.
The petition, filed by the Hindu Dharma Parishad, comes amid a row over the matter as the temple sits near a dargah. Last month, the Madras High Court directed the temple management to light the lamp for the Tamil Karthigai Deepam festival while instructing authorities not to obstruct devotees.
