New Delhi, Sept. 24 -- Former English umpire Dickie Bird, one of cricket's most popular figures whose officiating illuminated the human touch that has been overshadowed by technology, died at home on Tuesday, the Yorkshire County Cricket Club announced. He was 92. The Yorkshireman's first-class career as a top-order batter with his home County and then Leicestershire was brief and ended because of injuries. However, the iconic status Bird achieved as an international umpire and the way he endeared himself to fans for his idiosyncrasies rivalled the biggest stars of the period.
