Amputee rape and murder convict escapes from jail, caught in 4 hours
Kochi, July 26 -- A rape and murder convict, whose arm was amputated years ago, cut through the bars of his prison cell at Kannur Central Jail, scaled a 25-foot boundary wall with the help of a rope made out of clothes and managed to escape early Friday. However, his freedom was short-lived as police managed to nab him within four hours.
The convict, identified as Govindachamy (41), is serving a life sentence in connection with the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in 2011.
Govindachamy -- whose left arm was amputated years ago -- escaped from solitary confinement by cutting through the bars of the jail cell using a sharp weapon which officials believed he sourced from someone inside the jail.
