Afghanistan's fragile ecology after warfare
New Delhi, Oct. 13 -- The biggest powers in the world have forgotten Afghanistan. The country has been a site of wars since the Russian invasion from 1979 to 1989. It then experienced intense conflict right after 9/11 for two decades straight -- the longest war in US history, more than even Vietnam. According to scholar, Anchita Borthakur, the US dropped over 85,000 bombs on Afghan territory during the 20-year conflict. These have contributed to turning the country's land barren and sterile, if not toxic. Meanwhile, evidence shows Russia used napalm or the dreaded Agent Orange as well.
