6 killed in pre-dawn Goa temple stampede
Panaji, May 4 -- At least six people died and 70 others sustained injuries after a stampede broke out during an annual temple festival in Shirgao village in North Goa on Saturday, with chief minister Pramod Sawant ordering a magisterial probe into the incident and announcing ex gratia of Rs.10 lakh each to families of the deceased.
The incident took place around 3am near the Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao when thousands of devotees thronged the road leading to the temple for jatra, an annual pilgrimage festival. Police said a scuffle broke out between devotees on the narrow stretch of road, which is at an incline, following which people fell over each other and were crushed.
