India, Sept. 27 -- Actor-turned-politician Vijay's massive public rally in Karur took a deadly turn on Saturday evening as severe overcrowding caused at least 10 deaths, with at least 30 people in hospital, officials told HT.

The event, headlined by the Vijay who leads a party called Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), drew thousands of supporters, quickly became unmanageable as the crowd began inching towards the stage.

Despite efforts to maintain order, the situation escalated, prompting Vijay to end his speech mid-way. Amid the chaos, Vijay was also seen calling out the police to help people after it was reported that a child had gone missing in the crowd.
