New Delhi, May 8 -- Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will have to be examined and certified by its manufacturers - Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Electronic Corp of India Limited - in case of disputes, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday, adding that if a candidate is unsatisfied even after that, they can demand a mock poll. The court was hearing pleas by NGO Association for Democratic Reforms and Congress leader Sarv Mitter challenging a technical standard operating procedure (SOP) prepared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in July last year. The petitions alleged non-compliance with the apex court's April 2024 judgment in the EVM-VVPAT case which provided for "checking and verification" of burnt memory and software in the EVMs....
