Brief Summary: Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is a chronic progressive autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of gastric parietal cells leading to atrophy of the acid-secreting glandular mucosa. The destruction of parietal cells results in achlorhydria and intrinsic factor deficiency, causing malabsorption of iron and vitamin B12, which in turn leads to a series of clinical manifestations such as iron deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia, and neuropsychiatric symptoms.
