India, June 30 -- At the recently concluded ProPak Asia 2025, held from June 11 to 14 in Bangkok, Sealed Air Packaging reaffirmed its leadership in the flexible packaging industry by spotlighting a diverse range of innovative, sustainable, and high-performance food packaging solutions. The global packaging giant drew considerable attention for its advances in shelf-life extension, operational efficiency, and food waste reduction.
In an exclusive conversation with FoodTechBiz at the event, Surendra Soni, executive director - Marketing Asia at Sealed Air Packaging, shared insights into the company's product innovations, sustainability goals, and market strategy in Asia.
Sealed Air: A global packaging leader with a fresh food focus
Introducing the company, Soni explained, "Sealed Air is a flexible packaging company, primarily focused on fresh food packaging. We are a U.S.-based multinational with offices and manufacturing facilities across the globe."
With iconic brands such as CRYOVAC(R) and Liquibox(R) under its portfolio, Sealed Air has long been recognized for its holistic approach to packaging solutions. "Our value proposition is built around three pillars - shelf-life extension, operational efficiency, and reducing food waste," Soni emphasized.
Sealed Air provides both packaging materials and equipment, catering to some of the world's leading food processing companies and brands. "Our solutions ensure product integrity, food safety, and shelf-life extension, which are the hallmarks of our packaging," he added.
Innovation on Display at ProPak Asia
Among the highlights at Sealed Air's booth was the Liquibox range, a bag-in-box solution for a variety of food service applications. "Liquibox is a company we acquired three years ago, and it's now a central part of our strategy," Soni said. "We are seeing significant traction in packaging for milk, fruit juices, sauces, and even post-mix syrups used by customers like Coca-Cola and Pepsi."
Strategically, Sealed Air is expanding Liquibox in Asia Pacific with facilities in Bangkok, Thailand, and TAIZHOU, China, enabling agile service delivery across the region.
Another focal point at the show was Sealed Air's thermoforming technology, which is widely used in processed food packaging. "It involves using a bottom and top film, with food sealed between them. This uses what we call 'roll stock' - one of our largest product categories," he explained.
In the chilled section, Sealed Air demonstrated its Cryovac shrink bag technology - a solution customized for fresh red and white meats. "Shrink bags wrap the product snugly, ensuring a secure fit," said Soni. "They protect the product from leaks, transit damage, and allow storage for up to 12 months in frozen conditions. This is especially critical for seafood exports from Southeast Asia to Europe and the U.S."
Sustainability at the core
A major theme at Sealed Air's ProPak Asia exhibit was sustainable packaging.
Sealed Air's Darfresh roll stock solution is one such example. "Some of our customers in China and Australia have been able to double their product shelf life from 14 to 28 days, allowing longer distribution without sacrificing freshness," he said.
The company's 'sustainable solutions packed with purpose and performance' are making a tangible impact. "Where others may use a 200-micron bottom film, we deliver the same strength and integrity with just 120 microns - cutting down on plastic usage without compromising performance."
Sealed Air's materials are also recycle-ready, and the company helps customers align with Resin Identification Codes (RIC) to streamline end-of-life disposal. "Many of our materials can flow directly into polyolefin recycling streams - provided the local infrastructure exists," he added.
Product launches and technological edge
Among the new offerings showcased at ProPak Asia was the Liquibox Pure Bag - a 100% recyclable bag-in-box solution for wine, water, and syrups. "We introduced this recently, and while it wasn't launched specifically for ProPak, the show gives us a perfect platform to promote it," said Soni.
Asked about material strength versus sustainability, Soni explained Sealed Air's co-extrusion technology, which bonds layers without adhesives. "This eliminates delamination and ensures leak-proof barriers. Depending on product needs, we use advanced barrier technologies like PVDC for shrink bags or EVOH for roll stock," he said.
Packaging trends in Southeast Asia
Soni highlighted convenience and sustainability as dominant packaging trends in Southeast Asia. "Consumers want portion packs, easy-open features, and on-the-go formats. They're also more environmentally conscious. Brands need to deliver on both fronts," he noted.
ProPak Asia: A decade of engagement
Sealed Air is no stranger to ProPak Asia. "We have been participating for over 10 years, and I have been attending for the last seven," said Soni. "What used to be a regional event is now truly global, attracting stakeholders from Europe, China, and beyond."
This year, the company also showcased solutions from its Protective Packaging Business Unit, including the Autobag machine used in e-commerce and spare parts industries. "We are also introducing paper-based protective packaging solutions - another step toward our sustainability vision," he said.
What's next for India and Asia?
While Soni remained tight-lipped about specific upcoming launches, he hinted at exciting developments later this year, especially customized for markets like India. "We are working on some key innovations. Stay tuned," he teased.
Soni concluded by reiterating Sealed Air's unique value proposition: "We offer end-to-end solutions - materials, equipment, and a strong local service presence in every country where we operate. This eliminates the need for customers to deal with multiple vendors. Our solutions are fully integrated and backed by food technologists and application engineers who provide customized, reliable support. We are not just a material supplier - we are a total solutions provider."
Sealed Air's presentation at ProPak Asia 2025 was not just a product showcase - it was a powerful statement of the company's vision for the future: a world where packaging plays a key role in reducing food waste, enhancing efficiency, and protecting the planet.
