Sri Lanka, Aug. 31 -- United National Party Deputy General Secretary, former MP Ruwan Wijewardene expressed his desire to lead the UNP on the request of supporters after the General Election defeat. He stated that he was ready to take over the leadership and stressed the need to rebuild the collapsed party.

Wijewardene stated this to the media after visiting the Mahanayakes of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters in Kandy yesterday (30).

He said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has no opportunity to become the UNP leader as he has formed a separate Party and entered Parliament under that Party.
