Sri Lanka, Nov. 20 -- The 2026 budget of the Yatiyanthota Pradeshiya Sabha, led by the National People's Power (NPP), was defeated today by a margin of four votes.
Tensions flared during the budget debate after contentious remarks were made regarding plantation workers, leading to a brief heated exchange among members.
When the vote was taken, 13 members supported the budget-including the chairman and 12 NPP members-while 17 voted against it. Those opposing the budget included representatives of the United National Party, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, United People's Freedom Alliance, Democratic People's Front, Sarvajana Balaya, as well as several independent members.
