Sri Lanka, June 18 -- Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People's Power (NPP) officially assumed duties today as the 26th Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

She was elected to the post on Monday after securing a majority of 26 votes in a secret ballot held at the council.

Balthazaar received 61 votes, while her rival, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate Riza Zarook, obtained 54 votes.

With this appointment, Vraie Cally Balthazaar becomes the second female Mayor in the history of the Colombo Municipal Council.
