Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- Sri Lanka's Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) has not recruited a single new veterinarian so far this year, worsening an existing shortage in the sector, officials revealed.

Dr. Tharaka Prasad, Director of Wildlife Health at the Department of Wildlife Conservation, said the DAPH currently has only 16 veterinarians 18 fewer than required. Last year, just one female doctor joined the service.

"The low intake is due to limited financial benefits and the demanding nature of the job," Dr. Prasad explained, noting that many veterinarians opt for private animal clinics that offer higher salaries and better facilities.
