Sri Lanka, Feb. 11 -- Twelve individuals were today sentenced to death over the murder of former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer during the 'Aragalaya' period in Nittambuwa.

In addition to the death sentences, four other accused were handed six-month suspended prison terms.

Meanwhile, 23 accused were acquitted and released due to insufficient evidence linking them to the incident.

The former MP and his police security officer were killed in Nittambuwa in May 2022 amid unrest during the height of the 'Aragalaya' protests.
