Colombo, March 20 -- The tax imposed on cigarettes is coming down over the past few years and a new decision must be taken in parliament regarding the cigarette tax, Chairman of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) Dr. Harsha De Silva said today.

He told Parliament that the government revenue from cigarettes tax is less than the revenue generated by the company.

The MP said the methodology of imposing tax on cigarettes is wrong and added that 75 percent tax must be imposed on cigarettes which is accepted even by the WHO and UNDP.

He proposed to review the tax on cigarettes and take a fresh decision in Parliament regarding the matter.
