Colombo, Oct. 6 -- A supermoon is lighting up the sky on Vap Poya Day today, appearing approximately 7% larger than a typical full moon, the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) said.

The full moon tonight is classified as a supermoon due to its increased size and brightness compared to other full moons observed on Poya days. Supermoons occur several times a year when the moon moves closer to the Earth along its elliptical orbit.
