Sri Lanka, Jan. 27 -- The Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society has celebrated 65 years of service, having donated more than 100,000 corneas for transplantation abroad over the decades.

Speaking to the media, Ayodya Sampath De Silva of the society said the Eye Bank provided 101,483 corneas to countries including Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, and Pakistan. Locally, the society donated 65,546 corneas, while the Tissue Bank supplied 19,887 tissues for medical use.

Looking ahead to 2026, the society plans to conduct 1,750 free cataract surgeries and distribute 30,000 free spectacles for reading and near vision through 100 community programs nationwide.
