Sri Lanka, May 31 -- A spill gate of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir was opened this afternoon due to rising water levels, the Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit confirmed.

A spokesperson for the unit said that if heavy rainfall continues, the remaining spill gates of the reservoir will open automatically as a precautionary measure to manage the inflow.

Authorities have urged residents living downstream of the reservoir to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions, as water levels may rise further with the ongoing rainfall.
