Colombo, Feb. 28 -- Over 17,000 social media incidents were reported last year, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) said.

SLCERT engineer Charuka Damunupola, speaking to the Daily Mirror revealed that 1,371 cases of online adult sexual harassment were reported.

He also pointed out that 60 cases of child sexual harassment were reported, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and stronger protection measures for children.

Damunupola further said that 16 incidents of suicide or self-harm, stressing the critical need for greater attention to online safety.

In addition, a total of 6,123 accounts were hacked, raising serious concerns about the security of personal data.
