Sri Lanka, Dec. 5 -- The Department of Meteorology has issued a red alert for severe lightning in parts of the country, including the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, and the Galle and Matara districts, effective until 11.00 p.m. today.

According to the advisory, red alerts have been issued for seven districts, while amber alerts are in effect for eight others, indicating a heightened risk of lightning activity.

The Met Department warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely in the affected areas and advised the public to take necessary precautions to minimise the risk of lightning-related incidents.
