Sri Lanka, Jan. 11 -- Restoration work on the Northern and Talaimannar railway lines began today (11), backed by a USD 5 million grant from the Government of India.
The development and modernisation project, launched several years ago to allow train operations at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, had been stalled after the lines sustained damage during the Ditwah disaster.
The scope of the project includes the construction of five bridges and an underpass to ensure the safe movement of wild elephants.
