Colombo, April 24 -- Police officers had been directed to inspect individuals wearing helmets while not riding motorcycles, especially if they appear suspicious, Police said.

The directive, issued by Police Headquarters, comes after investigations revealed that suspects in recent shootings and murders across the island often used full-face helmets to conceal their identities.

The Police also emphasized that helmets are required only for motorcycle riders and their passengers, strictly for safety purposes.

As such, if a person is seen wearing a helmet off-bike and acting suspiciously, officers have been instructed to stop and check the individual and their belongings as a precautionary measure to prevent crime.
