Srilanka, May 10 -- The police announced that the 15-year-old schoolgirl in Kotahena, who is said to have committed suicide on April 29, had allegedly been sexually abused by a teacher at her Bambalapitiya school last December, as revealed by the police probe.

The Police Media Division in a statement said, the Bambalapitiya Police acting on a complaint received on December 8 took the suspect teacher into custody on January 8 and produced him before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's court to be remanded till January 10.

The suspect was later released on bail and a travel ban had been imposed pending further investigations. The case is scheduled to be taken up on May 19.
