Sri Lanka, May 26 -- A police sergeant attached to the Gokarella Police Station has been suspended following the circulation of a video on social media showing an assault on a civilian, the Police Media Division said.

According to the statement, the incident took place on Saturday night (May 24) when police officers stopped a man and a woman who were reportedly speeding on a motorcycle. During the encounter, one of the officers was seen assaulting the male rider, prompting public outrage after the video surfaced online.

The Kurunegala District I Superintendent of Police has launched a formal investigation into the incident.
