Colombo, April 1 -- A 19-year-old girl drowned and two others, including a teacher, were hospitalized yesterday (March 31) after they swept away by the waves while bathing at the Nayaru Beach in Kokkilai.

According to the police, a group of 16 students and a teacher from an apparel training school in the Irappu area of Puthukkudiyiruppu had traveled to the beach for a picnic.

While bathing, two young women were swept away by strong currents. The teacher who attempted to rescue them, was also caught by the current.

The Navy managed to rescue the teacher and one student, but the second girl drowned and went missing.
