Sri Lanka, Aug. 5 -- The Cabinet approved a proposal to reduce the annual group insurance coverage for Members of Parliament (MPs) from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 250,000, with the new policy taking effect from October 9, 2025.
The proposal was submitted by Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala in line with an initiative of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to scale back privileges granted to MPs.
The group insurance scheme, initially introduced in May 2023, was designed to provide each MP with a maximum annual coverage of Rs. 1 million.
