Sri Lanka, Sept. 18 -- Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake has said that officials who cannot ensure the proper functioning of railway services should resign from their positions.

Addressing a meeting at the Kalutara District Secretariat with Members of Parliament and transport officials, the Minister criticised the Railway Department for neglecting its responsibilities and failing to provide even basic facilities for commuters.

"Windows on trains cannot be closed properly, and when they are, the seats get drenched. None of the fans work. On a two-and-a-half-hour trip from Galle to Colombo, the only washroom has no water.
