Srilanka, Feb. 20 -- Railway services on the Batticaloa line have been disrupted after the Meenagaya Intercity Express Train collided with a herd of elephants in the Gal Oya area this morning, the Railways Department said.

The Wildlife Conservation Department said that five elephants, including three calves and two female elephants, were killed in the accident, and the train derailed as a result. Another female elephant and a calf sustained injuries.

The injured elephant and calf are currently being treated at the Girithale Wildlife Department.

Due to the incident, operations on the Batticaloa line have been limited.
