Sri Lanka, Oct. 31 -- Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today granted bail to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's security officer, Neville Wanniarachchi, who had been in remand custody on suspicion of unlawfully acquiring assets and properties worth Rs. 28 million.

The suspect was released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 1 million each.

The court granted bail after rejecting a request by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to further remand the suspect, on the grounds that no new facts had emerged through the additional report to justify continued detention.

The case was fixed for further hearing on January 16.
