Sri Lanka, Sept. 17 -- Kidney diseases cause around 1,600 deaths in Sri Lanka each year, averaging five deaths daily, the Health Promotion Bureau said.
Consultant Community Physician Dr. Chintha Gunaratne said chronic kidney disease (CKD) and long-term kidney failure can lead to reduced urine output and the body's inability to eliminate excess fluid, triggering multiple complications.
She added that kidney disease also disrupts red blood cell production, lowers vitamin D levels, and interferes with blood pressure regulation.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a global rise in kidney-related illnesses, estimating that one in 10 people could develop chronic kidney disease in their lifetime.
