Sri Lanka, Dec. 17 -- A wild elephant found lying in a home garden at Seeppukulama in Mihintale died yesterday afternoon after being set on fire with burning torches, wildlife officials said.

The elephant had sustained a gunshot injury to a forelimb, which had left it unable to move. Despite emergency treatment provided by wildlife veterinary surgeons who rushed to the scene, the animal succumbed to its injuries.

Wildlife officials said the elephant had suffered severe burn injuries, which are believed to have caused its death. The exact cause will be determined following a postmortem examination.
