Sri Lanka, Sept. 8 -- The Kollupitiya Police have launched an investigation after a one-year-old child was reportedly swept away from the beach by strong sea currents at Kollupitiya on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, initial information indicated that a woman may have thrown the child into the sea. However, witnesses stated that around 3:30 p.m., the woman was seen screaming for help, claiming her child had been pulled away by the currents.

Police suspect that the woman may have jumped into the sea with the infant.

A joint search operation by the Sri Lanka Navy and Police is currently underway to locate the missing child. The woman, a resident of Welimada, is receiving treatment at the National Hospital, Colombo.
