Sri Lanka, Nov. 28 -- India has agreed to deploy helicopters from its aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, currently docked in Colombo, to support Sri Lanka's ongoing rescue and relief operations as Cyclonic Storm Ditwah causes severe weather across the island.

Earlier, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha, said that Sri Lanka had requested assistance from the Indian warship, including the use of its aircraft, to aid in relief operations.

A formal request was submitted to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, he said during a special media briefing.

Thuyacontha said that adverse weather is also affecting the Indian aircraft, and flight operations may be limited under current conditions.
