Sri Lanka, Sept. 11 -- A popular wild elephant known as Mahasilu was found dead in a paddy field at Ilukpitiya, Okkampitiya this morning (11).

The tusker, often seen in the Buttala and Okkampitiya areas, was admired for his large tusks and calm nature.

The cause of death is still unknown, and wildlife officers have launched a special investigation. A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out to determine how the elephant died.

Officials from the Moneragala Wildlife Office are conducting further investigations.
